Installing Roofing Shingles
Installing roofing shingles is pretty self evident and self explanatory after your first few rows of the job. You’ll likely look back at your first few completed rows and wonder why you were ever anxious about this first job of yours to begin with. First and foremost, you obviously don’t want to do this work while it’s snowing or hailing; you don’t want work during a rain storm either. Try to compromise with the forecasts for the next few days, and hone in on a block of days, and let the client know what the status is of that schedule. The shingle installation doesn’t take that very long at all, nor is it very complicated or physically strenuous. Before you put down your so called starter row, you’ll need to put down what some people refer to as tar paper, the roofing felt.
Start from the bottom of the roof and work your way up. You’ll need to affix the tar paper down to the roof with screws or nails. Make sure to adequately overlay your felt, and make sure the entire area of the roof is covered and secure. When you’re finished, select a roof end. Again, you’ll be starting from the bottom and working your way up. You’ll need to initiate the pattern with a starter row or strip. Set your starter strip down, which will be a length longer than you’re succeeding rows, because the shingle’s need to offset each other. This is to prevent any leaks in the future.
