What is BPI Certification?
Energy auditing appears to be the wave of the future as our government, and governments throughout the world, work to combat global warming. If you, or someone you know, is unemployed this may be the perfect career to switch to. In fact, financial assistance may even be available to help you with the career change. Jobs in this field will become increasingly popular as the world makes this shift and, with cap and trade a strong possibility in our future, your economic future may be set by making the switch.
Two energy auditor standards are nationally recognized: the BPI Building Analyst and RESNET HERS Rater. These programs are the only two which offer individual credentials which receive this type of recognition. To become certified as a BPI Building Analyst you must meet certain standards. First, a written exam must be passed. This exam is two hours long and consists of 100 questions. You must pass the exam with at least a 70% to complete the first part of the BPI certification process. Once this portion is completed, you will then move on to the next step. This is the two hour field exam in which you must demonstrate competency in not only the energy audit process, but also the equipment used in the process. Formal training is not required, but is recommended for those wishing to pursue this line of work.
Once you have obtained your BPI certification, you will then be able to perform certain tests to determine the energy efficiency of a building. Tests that you may complete include combustion appliance inspection, duct testing and blower-door tests. BPI certification must be completed every three years and can be accomplished by either re-taking the test or completing a continuing education course through a BPI affiliate. Many programs are offered so find one that works best for you.
Upon completing your BPI certification, you can offer your services as an energy auditor or you may wish to pursue other job opportunities. Some analysts prefer to work with contractors during the building or remodeling process. In addition, some contractors prefer to complete the certification process as it allows them to perform many services without the help of another person. Whichever path you decided to take, know this is a field that is growing and will be in high demand in the future. Training in this field will not be wasted and your employment prospects will increase. It is definitely something to consider in today’s depressed economy.
